Justin and I met at his solo presentation Pleasure Gutus at Five Car Garage, in Los Angeles in 2021. Ben Sang had told me about his work and decided to fly down to the show, so that him and I could drive up together to prepare Siren Fort in Utah later that month.
At a dinner the following year, I am seated across from writer and critic Grant Tyler who brings up Tecopa, a hidden desert location he has visited many time during his adolescence, growing up in a suburb of Las Vegas. Tecopa, we later find out, is within a few miles of a somewhat famous fossil site that Justin has long wanted to visit. Soon thereafter we plan a trip into the desert in search of fossils, bringing with us a series of drawings and a couple of fossil engravings that Justin has been working on.
